Born Market
The Born Market is a market located in La Ribera district of Barcelona, close to the Ciutadella Park and França Railway Station. It was one of the first and most important cast-iron buildings in Barcelona. It was designed in 1873 by the architect Antoni Rovira i Trias and built by Josep Fontserè i Mestre thanks to the collaboration with 'La Maquinista', a metallurgic company.
It was opened to the public in 1878 and was a central market until 1971, when MercaBarna was opened. In 2002, the City Council decided to rehabilitate the whole market but during the works the archaeological remains of the medieval settlement from 1714 were found. In consequence, the works were abandoned and are to restart in 2012.
