Laribal Gardens - Cat Fountain

Laribal Gardens, located on the mountain of Montjuic, were created for the 1929 Universal Exposition in Barcelona. Inside these beautiful gardens you will find one of the most famous fountains in Barcelona, Font del Gat, situated in one of the most isolated corners of the mountain. Formerly, the gardens were part of the estate owned by a prestigious lawyer Josep Laribal, after whom they got their name.

Inside the gardens, there are numerous terraces, pergolas, flower beds and waterfalls, which together create an ideal place to enjoy a relaxing stroll in peace and quiet. The gardens were modernized by the French landscape painter, Jean-Claude Nicolas Forestier, who collaborated with the young Nicolau Maria Rubio. Their work was commissionned by Francesc Cambo, curator of the exposition and a member of the Regionalist League, a very influential political party at that time. The gardens, modelled on the Moorish gardens of the ancient Kingdom of Granada, are full of ceramic pieces integrated into the railings, pots and other structures found there. It also has numerous small waterfalls and ponds. The gardens are full of native vegetation mixed with more exotic plants. They connect the Jardines del Teatre Grec with the Joan Miró Foundation.

The famous fountain, Font del Gat, was sculpted in 1918 by Joan Antoni Homs in the shape of a cat's head from which the water flows. Near the fountain, there's a noucentista building designed by Josep Puig i Cadafalch which used to be a restaurant, but now is home to the Royal Spanish Tennis Federation. This place is slightly hidden by dense plants sourrounding it and can be accessed through the stairs overlooking the Passeig de Santa Madrona. The fountain is so famous in Catalonia that there is even a Catalan song dedicated to it.
