Montículo de la Libertad en Poznań

El Montículo de la Libertad en PoznańMound of Freedom is located in Poznan, on the right bank of the Warta river in the district of New Town, in the part called Malta. Originally built to celebrate the victorious uprising of the Wielkopolska region (one of 2 victorious in history of Poland, both from Wielkopolska) and join the independent Polish. Rebuilt to symbolize freedom broadly understood as the greatest human value.

Inauguration of building the Mound of the Resurrection took place during the national holiday - May 3, 1919. Procession passed through the town, which was attended, by many authorities. In construction work, in addition to the inhabitants of Poznan and Wielkopolska, also took part - arriving individually - guests from other Polish territories. The final block of the mound was formed in 1922. Monument reached a height of 94 meters above sea-level, which allowed him to ascend its peak of 17 meters above the road level. The Mound of Freedom was demolished during the Nazi occupation, by slave labour, often the same people who had built it.

In 1979 it was decided to repair the basin which was built in the 50s. Lake Malta, in order to hold a World Championship in Canoe, which was to be hosted by Poznan in August 1990. During the Polish People's Republic, for political reasons there were no plans to rebuild the Mound of Freedom. However, to deepen the lake and restore its performance as a racing track, the constructors had to extract huge amounts of sand. Its transport costs would be too high, so they decided to create an elevation of terrain in the neighbourhood (the designer was Clement Mikula). This way nobody was accused by the Communist authorities of reconstruction of the monument. The official reason was the development of the hill Malta used for sport and recreation purposes. They created a complex (including the year-round ski slope, toboggan run and a mini golf field). Currently the mound has a height of 100 meters above sea level, but it remains in its unfinished form because of the terrain and legal problems.

In 2004 an association Mound of Freedom in Poznan was founded. The intention is to finalize the construction of the Mound of Freedom. Currently the hill is used as a ski slope and a summer luge track.
