Four Columns

Four Columns is a monument located on Avenida Maria Cristina, opposite to the Nacional Museum and Magic Fountain on the Montjuïc Mount in Barcelona. They are built in Ionic style.

Columns which are seen today were rebuilt in 2010. They have been design in such a way to be as close as possible to the place where they were standing originally, on the place of where today's Magic Fountain. This is the reason why they are standing so close to this square. At first they were designed by Catalan architect Josep Puig y Cadafalch.

The columns were to be unveiled in 1929 in the beginning of the World Exhibition that was held in Barcelona. They meant to symbolize the four red stripes on the Catalan flag "senyera", For the Catalans it was a symbol of patriotism and unity. They supposed to pay the international attention to the political situation in the country.
During the dictatorship of Primo de Ribera all symbols of the national-liberation movement were banned. Therefore issued a command to disassemble the column before the World Exhibition, because on the Mount Montjuïc were to be held major celebrations.
For the same reason of political compact, a traditional Spanish village "Poble Espanyol" built on Montjuïc Mount must have had a different name. The original one was supposed to be dedicated to the first inhabitants of Catalonia.

In 1999, The Autonomous University of Barcelona put similar towers on its Campus Bellaterra.
After eight years of efforts and negotiations, the Catalan authorities and the independent party Esquerra Republicana, we can admire Four Columns, near the place where they were standing originally. They symbolise the unity and independence of Catalonia.

Also when you will look at them from the historical point of view then they become more serious and very ... rating 1 rating 2 rating 3 rating 4 rating 5 2011-07-27 17:47:45
